The University of California announced Saturday all students, faculty and staff will be required to get the flu shot before Nov. 1.
The executive order was issued to protect the community, as well as lessen the burden on the health care system from the flu season and COVID-19, UC officials said in a release.
“The executive order is an important proactive measure to help protect members of the UC community — and the public at large — and to ameliorate the severe burdens on health care systems anticipated during the coming fall and winter from influenza and COVID-19 illnesses,” officials said.
All faculty and staff who work at a UC location will have to get the vaccination.
Students are already required to get certain immunizations, so the flu shot will be added to that list, officials said.
Faculty and staff may be able to request a medical exemption.
“A process will be put in place for faculty and staff to request medical exemptions. Requests for disability or religious accommodations will be handled through the interactive process consistent with existing location policies and procedures,” officials said.
