Puppy eyeliner may have made Vogue‘s list of 2022’s weirdest beauty trends, but that did not stop Billie Eilish from experimenting with the look at her 21st birthday party. The singer posted a slideshow of shots from the bash, for which she paired a Mrs. Claus-style outfit — complete with fluffy trim and candy cane hoop earrings — with eyeliner to make TikTok proud.

For the uninitiated, puppy liner is the antithesis of the more popular feline flick, and instead of sloping upwards at the end of the eye, turns downward. A trend that originated in Korea, the #puppyeyeliner hashtag has been viewed 97.3 million times on TikTok, and it has surprisingly flattering results. Eilish herself pulls the look off with ease — and there are a few lessons to take from her effort.
The first is to follow the shape of your eye – avoid sloping the liner down too drastically or it can make your eyes look droopy or sad. The second is to use a smudgy pencil for a soft, diffused finish. And the third is to follow the lower rather than upper lash line, smudging downward at the outer corners for a slightly grungy, lived-in feel.
Eilish wasn’t the only person at her party with a killer beauty look. Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber were there, the latter sporting glossy red lips that were a perfect nod to the festive season. Bieber’s husband, Justin, appeared to be wearing Starface’s Acne Patches on his face and somehow managed to pull it off in style.
