Automation is everywhere, promising to make our lives easier and more productive. When it comes to mowing our lawns, the traditional time-saver has been finding someone else to do the work. Engaging the services of a professional lawn care provider is usually the most reliable method to save our energy and time. However, technology has evolved and now provides another alternative. Robotic mowers, or “mow-bots,” mow lawns all by themselves while you sit back and watch.

First introduced in 1995, robot mowers have come a long way. At first, there was only one manufacturer with a single solar-powered model, but now they are produced internationally. You can find both battery and solar-powered options, and various models capable of mowing a broad range of property sizes. When looking at robotic mowers, consider these factors before purchasing.
The size of your lawn
Lawn size is one of the principal factors when choosing a robotic mower. Small mowers will maintain a quarter of an acre, medium mowers up to a half-acre, and large mowers up to one acre. Measure your lawn space by taking your lot size and subtracting the square footage of your home, all paved areas, landscaping, and any other spaces that do not require mowing. Steep slopes, obstacles, and highly irregular shapes will lessen your mower’s efficiency and ability. If your lawn has a slope, check to see the tolerance a mower has for that slope before purchasing.
Sound level and convenience
Convenience and quiet are two significant reasons for purchasing one of these little wonders. As quiet as a refrigerator, they can work overnight while you and your neighbors sleep undisturbed. As these are autonomous, once programmed it can independently set off from its charging station at the appointed times to keep your lawn at the perfect height. The lawn does need to be clear of obstructions, such as hoses, toys, and large twigs. Unlike a lawn service, the mower does not pick up after you.
Up-front cost versus operating costs
Operating costs are lower over the long term, only requiring electricity to recharge; you’ll no longer have to make trips to purchase gas to refuel your mower. There is also no more time spent replacing filters, spark plugs, broken cords, and other familiar items.
However, the initial investment can be greater than the cost of a traditional gas-powered mower. Residential models start as low as $700, going up to $5,000 or more depending upon the type and number of features included. As mentioned above, be sure the mower can manage the size, terrain, and complexity of your lawn. Larger lawns may also benefit from being split into multiple areas, with the mower working in specific zones on certain days.
Easy storage versus increased maintenance
Robotic mowers are easy to store, as they will put themselves away on their charging unit. If you are in a situation where you must pick it up and move it to a storage area, you may want to check the weight of various models for one that is manageable. A survey of several brands shows weights ranging from 26 to 34 pounds. Their sizes are variable, but they are often shaped like a large, squatty footstool. Since they are generally smaller than most traditional mowers, it can be easier to find space to store robotic mowers during winter months.
The charging station or dock is plugged into a standard 120V power supply outlet, which supplies the electricity to recharge the batteries. Expect to get one to two and a half hours of mowing time from a single charge, depending upon the mowing conditions and model of mower. The recharging time is an hour, with batteries typically needing to be replaced after three years of use.
Maintenance is important, as they are in use more often, requiring cleaning on a regular basis. Grass clippings and clumps must not be allowed to accumulate. Due to its frequent use, the blades and blade disks must be replaced every three months. Repairs can be challenging and may require professional assistance.
Getting the model with the correct features at a price point you are comfortable with will take some research into the available choices. It doesn’t matter if you want a perfect-looking lawn or just an easier way to mow the grass on time—it can be beneficial to purchase a robotic mower if it fits your land and needs.
