Does this sound like you?: You’re in bed by 10 o’clock every night, fall asleep almost as soon as your head hits the pillow, and wake up bursting with energy without ever hitting that snooze button?
If not, then you’re probably more like me: you find it hard to fall asleep at night and even harder to wake up in the morning. And bad sleep habits like staying up late, having no regular bedtime, scrolling on your phone, watching TV, or working on your laptop late into the night are often to blame.
If you’re eating right, limiting caffeine and alcohol, and staying active you’re already on your way to setting up yourself for a great night’s sleep. But when we don’t go to sleep and wake up on a consistent schedule our internal body clocks, known as our circadian rhythm, can fall out of time and make rejuvenating sleep difficult. This is what can make us sluggish and groggy in the morning and zap our energy during the day.
Research shows that when you have a routine where you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, you’re more likely to be happier and more productive.
So, it may be time to makeover your sleep and wake routine. Or start one in the first place. But have you ever tried to set up a new sleep routine? I have and it’s not easy.
Guilty of bad sleep habits myself, I wanted to give Hatch Restore a try to see if I could finally get my sleep and wake routine back on track.
What is Hatch Restore and What Does it Do?
Designed to make setting up a sleep routine easy, Hatch Restore is a Bluetooth alarm clock that’s also a soundscape, relaxation, and meditation machine. What’s really cool is that it’s also a color-changing bedside lamp that can emulate sunsets to help relax at night and the sunrise to help you wake up as nature intended.
Using its app you can also use it to program your own timed multi-step sleep routine which can include time for reading, meditating, or simply getting right to bed as you listen to calming sounds or stories from their content library. It’s pretty awesome.
Hatch Restore Can:
- Help you establish a calming pre-sleep bedtime routine
- Help you maintain a regular sleep-wake schedule
- Act as an alarm clock, sound machine, Bluetooth speaker, bedside multi-color lamp, and nightlight
- Simulate a sunrise to help you wake naturally
Out of the Box Hatch Restore Has:
- 9 different sleep sounds including soundscapes like light rain and river creek
- 10 different sunrises that gradually brighten like the sun at waking
- 10 different wake sounds including chirping birds and meditative flutes
- White noise type sounds to help you block outside noises
- The option to upgrade to a library of premium relaxation and sleep content
A fun and relaxing way to get sleeping soundly and make waking up enjoyable instead of a battle, here are my favorite Hatch Restore features so far.
How To Set up Hatch Restore
Hatch Restore is easy to setup and customize your sleep and wake routine!
I found Hatch Restore really easy to set up right out of the box. Once you plug it in you’ll need to download their free app and you’ll be guided through the setup process.
Some users of Hatch Restore reported having trouble connecting it with their WIFI, but the process for me was quick and easy. I wasn’t even close to my home’s router like they recommend in the instructions.
In the Hatch Restore app, you can create the “steps” of your sleep routine which may include time for reading and meditating. It’s easy to add steps and they can be reorganized by simply sliding them up or down.
The morning routine or “sunrise alarm” is set up separately and includes your wakeup time, alarm or soundscape sound, and sunrise of choice.
Here’s My Sample Hatch Restore Bedtime Routine
Bedtime Routine (Tap to start)
Read: 30 minutes (no sound), lamp color on set on coral or ‘By Candlelight’ Sunset option.
Meditate: 5 minutes through the premium app or on your own to a soundscape of choice
Sleep: Clock off, lamp off, soundscape set to calm ocean through the night until wakeup time
Sunrise Alarm
Alarm: Wake at 8:00 am with chirping birds, Malibu sunrise gradually starting at 7:30 am (on by 8 am)
To start your sleep routine you simply tap the top of the Hatch Restore. To stop it, you press the same spot but hold it longer. So easy!
Instead Of A Blaring Alarm, Awaken Gently With Soundscapes Paired With Beautiful Light That Simulate A Sunrise
While creating a bedtime routine is where Hatch Restore shines, the sunrise alarm is my favorite feature. Simply choose your wake-up time and an alarm sound (optional), then choose a sunrise. Easy!
Designed to support your natural wake cycle which includes the healthy rise of cortisol levels in the morning in response to light, The Hatch Restore lamp will then turn on in the morning to help wake you up.
You can choose from sunrises with dreamy names like Spring Sunrise ( a golden peachy light) and Conquering Fiji (lavender light) or Portland Lighthouse (periwinkle blue) and also program it to gradually get brighter up to 60 minutes before your set wakeup time.
It’s like having a sunrise on your nightstand. I adore it!
Hatch Restore Sunrise Tip: When you first set up your Hatch Restore it introduces you to 6 wake-up sunrise styles to choose from. But once you’re in the app there is 9 total.
In the winter, when the mornings are dark and gloomy I know I’m going to love waking up with Hatch’s bright golden light. If you don’t get much light in your bedroom in the morning, this can be a life-changing feature for you.
The Music, Sleep Meditations And Sleep Stories Can Help Relax You At Night
If your mind races at night, Hatch’s content library available with their premium subscription has everything from body-scan meditations to narrated stories for adults to help you relax and unwind to set you up for your best sleep.
Some of my favorite options are their classical music and Deep Sea Dreams – a compilation of aquatic water recordings including the sounds of Icelandic lagoons, lapping New England lakes, and Mediterranean beaches. For something sure to get you snoozing, “The Craft Corner,” is an English narration of vintage craft and hobby books followed by soothing sounds that are sure to have you drifting off to sleep in no time. Nighty, night!
Hatch Restore Can Be Used As A Bedside Reading Lamp Too
If reading before bed helps you wind down, be sure to schedule reading time into your Hatch sleep routine within the app. The lamp can be used alone, with a soundscape, or music playing in the background as you read.
You can also set the length of time you want the lamp to stay on for reading as well as the color. Tones in orange and red tones are recommended in the app at night to reduce exposure to blue light, which can disrupt the body’s ability to make melatonin, the hormone that makes us sleepy.
The Newest Hatch Restore Feature I’m Loving: Sunsets!
Research has shown that sunsets make us happier, more peaceful, more connected with nature, and inspire us with feelings of warmth and coziness. Really, what’s there not to love?
So naturally, I was super excited when the Hatch Restore was recently updated (as of April 2022), to offer a menu of gorgeous sunsets that can be added to your bedtime routine or to set the mood when you’re meditation, journaling, reading, or simply relaxing.
Once you choose a sunset, with color options including ‘Hearthside’, ‘Timeless Twilight’, ‘Sunset Stargazing’, and Lunar Dusk,’ the lamp on the Hatch Restore will gradually dim as it changes its sunset-inspired colors over a 30-minute period. It’s now my all-time favorite feature after the sunrise wake-up.
Sunsets can either be added to your bedtime routine or used as a standalone lamp to wind down anytime you like. It’s a beautiful and calming feature and my new favorite way to set some mood lighting while reading or meditating.
The Pink Noise Feature Is Life-Changing If Outside Noises Are Keeping You Awake
I’m a light sleeper. Apparently, as soon as I doze off I also transition into a human security system, which means any unusual sound will startle me awake. I also happen to live on a street with a lot of traffic, which means when some lovely person zooms by on a motorcycle or revved-up truck I’m back awake. Thanks, guys.
In the app, Hatch Restore has white noise-type sounds that will block all that nonsense out. You can program it to stay on all night or for only a few hours. The choice is yours. Instead of white noise, Hatch calls theirs ‘Pink Noise,’ but there are similar sounds that work just as well called ‘fan’ and ‘dishwasher.’
This option is a sleep gamechanger if you live in a high-traffic area, city, near construction, a train track, an apartment with thin walls, or even with roommates or family members who keep different schedules than you. Pink noise is also great if you work the night shift and want to block out sounds of the day like loud garbage trucks or the sounds of lawnmowers and leaf blowers.
I Love The Sleek And Modern Look Of Hatch Restore And The Ability To Change The Lamp Color To Any Shade
Upon first taking this Hatch sleep machine out of the box, the design didn’t wow me. But the magic happened once I put it on my nightstand and set it up. Now I’m in love. With a modern aesthetic that can fit into most bedroom décor themes, the outside of the alarm clock is shrouded in a light gray mesh fabric that gives it a much softer vibe than your average alarm clock. When the reading/meditation lamp is on it looks like a beautiful half-moon at night or rising sun in the morning.
How Long Does It Take To Get Used To A New Sleep Routine With Hatch Restore?
How long it takes for you to get used to your new sleep routine will be different for every sleeper. Some people report sleeping and waking better with Hatch within a couple of days. I found myself getting adjusted to my nightly sleep routine within about 4 to 5 days, but getting in the habit of waking up fresh took me a little longer. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you, as long as you improve your sleep and feel better throughout the day.
The Clock Can Be Dimmed Or Shut-off Completely
Some of us like to always have the clock displayed through the night, but I like to sleep with as much darkness as possible. The Hatch Restore clock light can be turned up, dimmed, and even shut-off with custom schedules.
The Hatch’s Premium Subscription Has A Full Library Of Growing Content
Once you’ve set up your Hatch Restore and would like to explore more sleep-inducing content, the premium library in the Hatch Sleep Membership is outstanding.
Every Hatch Restore comes with a 1-month free trial you purchase through Google Play or the Apple Store in the app.
After that the subscription costs $99 per year or $9.99 a month offers even more options to customize your Hatch, which can be canceled at any time.
Premium content for you to help you wind down, stay asleep, and then wake up to includes:
- Binaural beats for deep relaxation
- Meditations
- Breathing exercises, yoga & stretches
- Ambient Sounds
- Soundscapes
- Sleep Music
- Narrated Stories
I was surprised at the amount of content the subscription offers and if you have multiple Hatch products in the house you only need one subscription for all devices. You don’t need the extra content to use your Hatch Restore but it’s a great option if you like variety.
The Speaker Is Great And You Can Use It To Play Your Own Music Through The Bluetooth
Most alarm clock speakers sound like they’re inside a fish tank which can be distracting when you’re attempting to relax. But I think the Hatch Restore speaker is surprisingly good. In addition to using it for your sleep and wake routine, connect it to the Bluetooth on your phone or laptop to play your own content like music or mediations whenever you want.
Get Close And Personal With Your Hatch And Give It A Name
Hatch is all about customizing your sleep and wake experience, but what makes your Hatch Restore even more personal to you is that you can even give it a sweet name. I love this touch and as crazy as it sounds I feel like it establishes a friendly connection between you and your new sleep restoring best friend. Yes, I know it’s just a smart lamp, but it’s pretty cute.
Who Hatch Might Not Be Right For
There’s no doubt that Hatch will help improve your sleep routine healthily while making waking more pleasant. But using Hatch Restore is heavily dependent on the app. Even though it’s super easy to use, it may not be the best option for someone who’s not tech-friendly.
Hatch Restore is also meant for personal use, so if your sleeping partner has different ideas of what the perfect soundscape may be, there might be some issues in the bedroom
While Hatch Restore is perfect for adults, check out their Hatch Babies & Kids Sleep options that are designed specifically to help babies and children fall asleep and stay asleep.
How Do You Know If Hatch Restore Will Work For You?
You’ll know if Hatch Restore is working for you by the way you feel when you wake up in the morning. If you have trouble falling to sleep you’ll find yourself falling and staying asleep easier.
If you wear a fitness tracker with sleep monitoring capabilities, see what your “sleep score” is before and after you start using Hatch. Give it at least a week or two to compare your results.
One Amazon reviewer found while using their FitBit with Hatch Restore that their: “sleep score” went from an average of below 70% to In the 80%’s the first week I started using it.”
