We know what you’re thinking: how could clumpy lashes result in such glamorous eye makeup? Jenna Ortega‘s attendance at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 26 was proof that when individual false lashes are intentionally placed against a thick coat of mascara, the word “clump” takes on a whole new meaning. It was her first time attending the awards and yet she harnessed the internet’s undivided attention — both with her look and her sly monologue with Aubrey Plaza in their role as award presenters.
Ortega’s voluminous mascara finish featured several clusters of lash that were longer than the rest, finessed with just the right amount of thickness. In an Instagram post, makeup artist Vincent Oquendo mentions he individually applied a number of individual false lashes against her icy-white eye shadow base. He kept the bottom lashes minimal with a soft brush through of mascara. Oquendo didn’t add eyeliner to brighten Ortega’s waterline; instead, his blend of frosty eye shadow against the bottom lash line — which he called a “reverse smoky eye” on Instagram — emphasized her wispy lashes, but the addition of inky-black eyeliner certainly didn’t hurt.
