Lexia Creates New Monthly Podcast Series
As part of its ongoing effort to empower educators with insights from literacy research, Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group company, has created a new monthly podcast series called “All for Literacy.” Each episode will be hosted by Lexia’s Chief Learning Officer Dr. Liz Brooke and will feature expert guests who are shaping literacy practices across the United States.
The series will explore how scientific findings are being applied in classrooms today—and how teachers can use this information to help all students become successful readers. “I’ve been on a mission to make sure teachers understand the ‘why’ behind the science of reading research and how to connect that powerful research to the practical world of the classroom. This has been a focus of mine because when I began my career as a first-grade teacher, I didn’t know what I needed to know about the science of reading,” said Brooke. “This is a passion project rooted in wanting to make research more approachable for educators. This podcast is going to be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to elevate literacy and create real equity in the classroom.”
A rotation of co-hosts with specialized knowledge in the field of literacy and science of reading will join in Dr. Brooke’s conversations with educators, researchers, and experts. For the first episode, scheduled for mid-February, Professor Dr. Tiffany Hogan, director of the Speech and Language (SAiL) Literacy Lab at MGH-Institute of Health Professions, will serve as co-host. She and Dr. Brooke will be speaking with Emily Hanford, an American Public Media senior correspondent who has covered education extensively in documentaries, podcasts, and articles.
One of Hanford’s main areas of focus is the way in which children are taught to read. In fact, her 2018 podcast episode, “Hard Words: Why Aren’t Kids Being Taught to Read?,” won the inaugural Public Service award from the Education Writers Association in 2019. In 2022, Hanford’s six-series “Sold a Story” podcast investigated four authors and one publisher that promoted and sold teacher training materials and curriculum rooted in a disproven idea. Dr. Brooke will speak with Hanford about her understanding of whether districts and states have made changes to reading instruction policies and methodologies since these episodes aired, as well as other reactions and responses she has received about the information she shared in her podcast.
In addition to the “All for Literacy” podcast, Lexia will also be hosting a monthly series of on-demand webinars that translate literacy research and educators’ knowledge and skills into practical insights for classroom instruction. The webinars will be available on the Lexia website.
