J.J. Rice, an 18-year-old kite foil racing star, has tragically passed away in a tragic accident.
He was set to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer after placing 8th in the Sail Sydney event late last year. J.J., who was born in the United States but lived in Tonga and considered himself a Tongan citizen, was set to represent the country at the games.
His father confirmed his cause of death to a local paper.

He was free diving from a boat this past weekend and it is believed he suffered a “shallow water blackout,” the news source reported. He was found on the seafloor and attempts to resuscitate him failed.
