A tipster from China shared some early info and renders for the Sony Xperia VII’s cameras. There is plenty of room for doubt regarding the validity of these rumors as the tipster does not have a solid track record of prior leaks but it’s still interesting to see what Sony could be up to with its next-generation Xperia.
Sony is reportedly looking to break up the vertical camera alignment seen on past Xperia 1 devices and separate the telephoto lens from the main and ultrawide cameras. This move is said to free up enough space inside the device for a 1/2.3-inch telephoto sensor compared to the 1/3.5” sensor on the Xperia 1 VI. The zoom camera will reportedly cover a 70-200mm equivalent focal range.
The main camera is expected to retain its 1/1.3” sensor size just like the current Xperia 1 VI while the ultrawide is also expected to boast a larger 1/2.3” sensor. Sony is still expected to go with a two-layer transistor pixel technology for all three cameras on the Xperia 1 VII.
The new report also suggests that Sony will not launch an Xperia 5 VI this year and that the series may be discontinued altogether, leaving the Xperia 1 as the only high-end smartphone line in Sony’s mobile business.
