The New $4.99 Trader Joe’s Freezer Find I’m Stocking From Now On

There’s something about croquettes that just feels fancy. Maybe it’s their golden hue or knowing how much work goes into making them. And it’s that second reason that often holds me back from filling and frying them myself, making Trader Joe’s Papas Rellenas a total score that I’m stocking up on.

The recently released freezer find is inspired by the Peruvian classic and simply means “stuffed potatoes.” It features a filling made from ground beef mixed with onion, garlic, and diced red and green bell peppers. The savory meat stuffing is reminiscent of the Mexican picadillo I grew up eating, right down to the rich tomato base and peppery oregano.

Why I Love Trader Joe’s Papas Rellenas

When it’s time to dig in, I always find breaking through the crispy crust so satisfying—especially knowing all the texture and flavor that lies beyond. I’m talking a generous layer of pillowy potatoes, followed by the hearty meat filling. It makes for one satisfying bite—or five since these things are seriously huge.

You get four jumbo croquettes in each box for only $4.99. They’re vacuum sealed into two packs of two, so unopened portions stay fresh until you’re ready to finish them—up to three months—but I have a feeling they’ll be gone quickly once you try them.

How I Serve Trader Joe’s Papas Rellenas

In addition to their mouthwatering taste and texture, I appreciate just how quick and easy they are to prep. By “prep” I mean sticking them into the oven or air fryer before placing them on a plate. It doesn’t get easier than that, making them a great option for a busy weeknight meal or an impressive app for guests.

With several in a pack, you’ve easily got dinner for four when served alongside a green or Caesar salad to offset the richness of the papas rellenas. My personal go-to’s include the Peruvian chopped corn and pepper salad called solterito and a big bowl of stewed pinto beans piled high with fresh tomatoes, cilantro, onion, and avocado slices.

Speaking of guests, whether they stop by unexpectedly or if you’re looking to create a menu for your next gathering that won’t leave you pooped before the party even begins, these South American croquettes are an easy and delicious appetizer that everyone will enjoy.

Any (unlikely) leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days when placed on a paper towel in an airtight food storage container, but my household has never had trouble polishing off the whole box at once.
